Sales Letters – Long and Short Form

Sales letters are self-explanatory but for those who have not come across them they are a specialized selling format for a web page. They come in basically two sizes;

Short Form – usually 500 words or less, these are hard-hitting sales pages that contain rapid revelation of the USP, quick and to-the-point coverage of often bulleted benefits/features, trust is instilled in sidebar testimonials and  a fairly large format single call to action. There are many variants out there but the main objective is to either glean contacts, or make a sale. This is possibly the most difficult of all documents to write.

Long Form – This is the same as the Short form but will be probably 2000 words or more (much more in some cases). Typically a Long Form Sales Letter will have a compelling introduction with paragraph after paragraph of information about benefits, features, interspersed with testimonials, guarantees and with usually a call to action or a “buy now” button spaced about a screen page apart. There is no real set length – it depends on how long you can keep conveying a message before either repetition, reader boredom, or a “Buy Now” Button is clicked.

Landing Pages

A landing page is the first page a new visitor sees when they arrive at a site. The purpose may be to act as the equivalent of the contents of a book, or to direct or “funnel” traffic toward an objective such as a sign up. Landing pages have to be easy to navigate and not try to cover too many functions at once.
